Kip Keino Classic 400m defending champion Zakithi Nene has issued a stern warning to his rivals ahead of the seventh edition of the race scheduled for Nyayo National Stadium on Friday.

Speaking on Wednesday night after arriving in the country, Nene admitted he will face stiff competition from Olympic bronze medalist Muzala Samukonga, who has already told his fans to expect victory. However, Nene insisted he wouldn’t have traveled to Nairobi if he didn’t believe he could win.

“I wouldn’t have taken the flight to Nairobi if I wasn’t going to win. I will successfully defend my title because my body is in amazing shape,” Nene told reporters upon landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

“Expect fireworks at Nyayo on Friday because I’m a fighter—I’m strong, and that’s my nature. I’m here to compete and win,” he said.

“It’s the second time I’m back in Kenya, so I’m excited about the race. I love my Kenyan fans—they’ve made the country feel like home,” he added.

Also considered a dark horse is World Indoor 4x400m relay champion Brian Faust, whose new season has been meteoric.

Despite the star-studded lineup aiming to dethrone him, Nene insists he is in Kenya to defend his title.

“I think I’ve received even more love and support here than in South Africa. I would have loved to explore the country after the race, but time won’t allow it, as I’ll be competing in the Simbine Classic in Pretoria on Tuesday,” he added. He also revealed plans to compete in the Commonwealth Games and the Diamond League series later this season.

Nene delayed the start of his season due to kidney issues, which he confirmed have now been fully treated.
